Organic chemistry is the study of carbon containing compounds.
Biochemistry is the chemistry of organisms.
The name organic is derived from the belief that only organisms can produce organic compounds.
This belief was dispelled by the direct synthesis of organic compounds from minerals.
Thus organic chemistry and biochemistry are considered two distinct but interwoven fields of study.
To understand biochemistry you must first study organic chemistry.
Organic chemistry is also important to the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, plastics, fuels, and other materials on which society depends.
Ironically, the concentration of many minerals is now recognized to come about by the action of organisms obscured by geologic processes.
