Help end world hunger

  • Organic chemistry is the study of carbon containing compounds.
  • Biochemistry is the chemistry of organisms.
  • The name organic is derived from the belief that only organisms can produce organic compounds.
  • This belief was dispelled by the direct synthesis of organic compounds from minerals.
  • Thus organic chemistry and biochemistry are considered two distinct but interwoven fields of study.
  • To understand biochemistry you must first study organic chemistry.
  • Organic chemistry is also important to the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, plastics, fuels, and other materials on which society depends.
  • Ironically, the concentration of many minerals is now recognized to come about by the action of organisms obscured by geologic processes.
