- Organic chemistry is the study of carbon containing compounds.
- Biochemistry is the chemistry of organisms.
- The name organic is derived from the belief that only organisms can
produce organic compounds.
- This belief was dispelled by the direct synthesis of organic compounds
from minerals.
- Thus organic chemistry and biochemistry are considered two distinct but
interwoven fields of study.
- To understand biochemistry you must first study organic chemistry.
- Organic chemistry is also important to the synthesis of
pharmaceuticals, plastics, fuels, and other materials on
which society depends.
- Ironically, the concentration of many minerals is now recognized to come
about by the action of organisms obscured by geologic processes.
